Parishioners brought more than their Bibles to Calvary Church of Santa Ana on Sunday morning. Also nestled in the pews were scarves and mittens, ready for a special mission.
After the "Joy to the World" service had concluded, it was time. Hats were pulled down. The gloves were on. The chapel doors opened. And hundreds gathered to witness an unusual sight: snow in Orange County. Man-made, trucked-in snow, to be more precise. And with the praying over, the playing began.
This was the church's first snow day. It was meant to reflect the joy in the Sunday-sermon message.
Dozens lined up to slide down a miniature sled run. Others swarmed around a giant snowman, grabbing handfuls of snow to throw at each other.
Kathe Chandler was in attendance with her kids. "They were hoping it'd be really, really snowing," the Chicago native said. But, she added, "They really love this."
