How K-12 courses are relevant to our world today
You hear it all the time.? A student upset they have to learn Trigonometry, or Algebra, or even learn the history of the Trojan War.? What good will these help the student who plans to major in Art or Music, or even becoming a chef in today?s world?? How will learning something that happened two or even three hundred years ago help a student in today?s world?? ?How will learning something not related to your major benefit you?
Today?s world is complicated
Today?s world is full of much more complicated science, math, history, and even linguistics has a better grip of our world than it did in the past thanks to the web.? Of note also is the updating of facts associated with subjects.? This happens after the human population learns something new that the past generations did not have access too, or know. Facts travel faster now than they did before the Internet came along.
You are what you learn in English
English is the most important task you will ever take on.? Learning the most fundamentals of how words are spelled, and put together to form sentences can make or break you in any job that you could take on.
In today?s world the student learns English, and then moves on to learn more English and Linguistics in College. English is just one step to learning language.? But it also could be any language you intend to learn.??? Everyone would be just talking, and writing in a bunch of gibberish.? There would be no talking universally because each community would have their own set of words, and how they use them would differ from town to town. ?A sentence in one area could mean peace, in another the same words mean war, and in an entirely different area they mean nothing.
Your fist language is an important step to your future.? It opens doors for you to communicate with the world.? Your fist language can inspire a people.? How?
Speechwriters
English is also a means to stop wars, and dictatorship. ?A very famous speech was given on June 12th 1987 that you may know about.? It was a former President Reagan speech. The words Reagan used were;
?General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!??
The speech Reagan delivered that day is considered by many to have affirmed the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the fall of communism. On Nov. 9-11, 1989, the people of a free Berlin tore down that wall.
Speechwriters are a breed of their own.? They can help a country elect a President, and they can deliver a hard truth to those that are listening.? Speechwriters are used by senior-level elected officials and executives in the government and private sectors all over the world.? They create speeches that are either private or public.? Some speeches are famous while others never were heard outside of a business establishment.
The Speech
There is no mistake in the words delivered to General Secretary Gorbachev that day.? After those words were spoken the whole world was watching and freedom rested on General Secretary Gorbachev?s choice.? He had to tear down the wall to save his people; he knew they also had to prosper, and to deny his people at that point would have been a devastating blow to the whole Soviet Union.
The speechwriter for that day was Peter Mark Robinson who was special assistant and speechwriter for former President Reagan. ?Peter Mark Robinson majored in English and graduated summa cum laude, then continued his studies at Christ Church, Oxford, pursuing a second Bachelor?s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and graduating in 1982. Robinson also attended the Leland Stanford Junior University?s Graduate School of Business. He graduated with an MBA in 1990. You can clearly see how his studies helped him to become a speechwriter for the President of the United States.
In today?s world
You may never have to write a speech for a famous person.? The President of the United States may never call you to write his speeches.? But you could be called to speak where you work, you may have to speak at a local city Hall meeting, or a board meeting.? It could be in reference to your job, and even getting a job or career.
English is a necessary subject, and even though you feel as though you are doing a good job in the communications department? How much better could you of done speaking on behalf of students, or in an important topic related to your school district, business, press, or religious affiliation?? ?The more you know about English the better off you are. ?The most fundamental reason of learning language well is that today?s society will take you more serious if you have speech, grammar, and spelling done very well.? A person that does not do a good job of it sometimes is brushed to the side, and not seriously considered.? It just depends on whom you are speaking too. Another way of putting this is your spelling, grammar, and speech can make or break you in today?s society.? If you don?t have this skill you can be ignored by certain classes of people.? People have even noticed this on the Internet.? Proper grammar can and will cause problems for you on the Internet.? So if your intentions are to reach everyone, then consider your Language skills, and English.
A way it depends on who you are speaking to is your own family.? Children learn by mimicking their parents.? If you teach them young to have good English speaking skills chances are they will have a good head start in communication.? A child that learns English has rules early has better skill at speaking, and even communication with the public.
English has also been linked to performance in higher learning. ??Of note also is that Blackboard.com put out a report (PDF) on the dropout rate of students in higher education. In the report they said that students were taking remedial classes in both English and Math before moving on to their majors.? In 2009 those that took remedial classes had a 50% dropout rate. Those that did not take the extra remedial classes to increase their skills in English and Math had even higher dropout rates.? ?Be sure you learn English and math well in grades k-12 so you don?t become one of these statistics.
History
I can see to where many will say that History is not needed in our schools.? I mean who wants to learn history on a bunch of men dressed in garb from back in the 1100?s?? Speaking of ?thee? and ?thou? is just not your cup of tea.
Although you can learn a lot from the history of wars.? The most famous of battles is the Trojan War.? Rather if it happened or not, this is still up for debate.? But the facts are there? The Ancient Greeks thought that it took place in the 13th or 12th century BC. Those who believe the Trojan War existed date it to 12th or 11th century BC. Often people accept 1194-1184 BC which was given by Eratosthenes of Cyrene. In 1870, German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated an area which He identified as Troy. Most scholars today accept this claim. However, whether there is a real historicity to the Trojan War remains still an open question.
History can teach us plenty from the beginning of time itself any war fought in was fought because of several reasons.? Some were land grabs, others were about freedom.? While even a few wars were fought to get rid of dictators that had no conscious of what was happening too their own people, or they were doing harm to the very people they swore to protect.? Some wars were about ending slavery too.
History is all about saving our past to show our future on what a people had to endure beforehand.? History also teaches a lesson to people on what works, and what doesn?t.? Famous quote that depicts this beautifully is; ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it? by George Santayana
History shows how strong a people are.? It also shows us who was involved in the making of the history, and it has a knack for pointing us towards the people worth mentioning.? History to me I have hailed as; ?the teacher to all nations of people?.? If you want to know if it was done, lost, found, fought, invented, helped, and frowned upon check the history books.? ?The formal definition is ?discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events.?
History is a tool.? That can be used as good or bad. This is done by Governments creating History textbooks for schools.? They are able to create the history as they see fit, and most information contained in these types of books shows their Government in their favor.? Such books don?t really show the true facts, but they show a country, or people in a good light so that the ones learning the content will show good respect for their Government.? Just think ?control? and you will have the right idea as to why they do this.
In today?s world
History can teach you lessons on what works, and what doesn?t.? You can use history to your advantage because you know what favorable outcomes may happen.? Or at least have an general idea on what could happen. ?History can help in times of war, but it can also help in business.? It helps in family history as well and city or local history can sometimes make or break you.? If you have a good understanding on the importance of history then you have the advantage many don?t have.? History is used in a lot of good things.? One very good thing is knowing where they buried a time capsule.? Another area is sports if you know what moves work for certain teams then you have a slight advantage. ?Of course history can also help you learning about your own family.?? You will be able to see firsthand the how and why your family is what it is.? Why you enjoy certain types of business, hobbies, music, photography, etc. and who in your family may have been famous.
The American Historical Association really writes up the best reasons as to why you should learn History.? They have a great quote that you should know about.
?History should be studied because it is essential to individuals and to society, and because it harbors beauty.?
