SoundCtrl ? Insider Interview: David Carrico and Judy Estrin of ...

By Kira Grunenberg

Any serious music fan would agree that there is nothing more disappointing than being shut out of a live show from a lack of tickets and venue space. The inextinguishable activity of scalpers, enthusiasm of pre-sale fanatics, and other special offers ?all these conditions make getting access to any concert like a race with a ?survival of the fittest? type mentality.

This being said, the thought of such almost makes the internet and digital streaming the perfect solution, as they offer ?infinite? audience space! A concept not likely to stay untapped for very long, creatives in the entertainment and music industries began taking to this idea and forming companies focused on broadcasting shows, either for free or for reasonable prices, for which consumers can pay online.

EVNTLIVE, a standalone concert streaming service, is another newcomer to the live streaming market and although it is far from the first of its kind, its co-founders, David Carrico, Alex Beckman, and Jonathan Beckman, along with an experienced team of high profile investors, (Troy Carter (CEO of Atom Factory), Yogen Dalai (Mayfield Fund partner) amid many others), believe there are still plenty of angles either unused or under utilized by existing players that will bring EVNTLIVE to the forefront of the digital concert and social music experience. The company has been in planning and development for over a year and is presently in beta launch, due to officially launch in the next few months.

David Carrico and business veteran Judy Estrin, the latter who is the Executive Chair of EVNTLIVE, chatted with me about their vision for the company and some of their thoughts on the general landscape of the music industry.?

SoundCtrl: First off, I would like to say congratulations on everything you have managed to put together for the imminent launch of EVNTLIVE. It is clearly difficult to penetrate most facets of the music business in general and you two have prepared a solid staff and strong business objective in a relatively fresh entertainment segment ?and there aren?t as many of those left these days!

Given that one of the major, and immediately noticeable, benefits to home streaming is ?infinite seating,? I am curious as to whether there is a personal experience for either of you, that prompted pursuing this business model. Are you currently, or were you previously, frustrated by the physical limitations of live music ? or was this an idea born simply out of wanting to expand the industry for the sake of creative change?

David: I spent several years running a boutique music management firm, and my experience on the road showed me both how tiring and costly touring can be for artists and how many fans in different parts of the world deeply desire to see an act but are unable to gain access to that experience for any number of reasons. With artist?s revenue streams dwindling in other categories we saw a real opportunity to create a newfound source of capital infusion from the monetization of streaming live concerts on the web. My co-founders and I are all passionate about live music and as our lives have gotten busier we have realized that we can?t attend as many shows as we would like ? EVNTLIVE is the service we wanted to exist.

SoundCtrl: Clearly, as is evident by EVNTLIVE?s wide offering objective of live music, archived content, real time social interaction and show background information, you have confidence EVNTLIVE will not plateau for users at simply, ?watch concert and leave site.? Still, as broad as this list of offerings is, do you feel maybe there is some potential for a double edged sword to form in expanding the live music segment through a concept that takes the very idea of ?live and in-person? out of the picture ?much like the continuous appeal of services like Instagram, that promote digital sharing and widening connections but, when appreciated in excess, almost disconnect people from being in the real present?

David: At EVNTLIVE we believe that there is no replacement for going to a live concert. Attending a live music performance for me personally is a social, communal, and sometimes spiritual experience. We have no intention of replacing that experience. Instead we we?re creating an online concert venue that offers the best user interface possible for individuals who can?t access the show in person. By creating a virtual social conversation, merch booth, and giving the user access to the story behind the show, we?re creating content that provides a unique look into an intimate performance experience but, we don?t believe it will ever replace the feeling of being in the front row with your friends around you feeling the vibrations of the music.

SoundCtrl: The both of you have quite the track records and impressive business ?resumes.? What are some, if any, of the specific facets to your previous business experiences that you have applied to the creation and fine tuning of EVNTLIVE?

Judy: Being involved in the creation of EVNTLIVE has leveraged many facets of my career.? Recruiting top engineers, developing large scalable systems, video streaming, building new companies, evangelizing new technologies; building business models to create new markets all draw from my entrepreneurial experience in starting seven companies. My board seats, especially, being a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company has given me an understanding of the entertainment industry, digital media, copyright licensing issues and consumer marketing that are all critical to the success of EVNTLIVE.

SoundCtrl: Let?s say EVNTLIVE catches on with vigor in post-launch. As I stated earlier, limitless seating is a big part of live streaming appeal. High profile artists like Lady Gaga for example, sell out even the biggest of arenas with no hard effort needed, so being able to ?expand the arena? would be perfect for die hard fans that get left out of the ticket line. This being the hypothetical case, can you talk at all about how EVNTLIVE plans to deal with the topic of technical overload, which can be a common problem with any digital stream?

David: A key asset of the company is the depth of our technical team that has years of experience developing large scale systems and infrastructure. We have not taken the approach of rushing a system to market with the notion that we can fix it later? we have invested the time and resources in building a service that can scale to meet the demands of the most popular artists.

SoundCtrl: Simply put, after launch, what kind of a music consuming world do you see EVNTLIVE existing in, even just five years down the line, and what will its place in that world be like?

David: Looking out five years, we hope to see the worlds of physical and online concerts coexisting as a standard way of doing business in the music industry.? The fan experience online will become increasingly interactive as we leverage new technologies. We see promise in 3D and 360 degree interactive filming as well as new ways of viewing from large screens to wearable devices. All of these advances add new connectivity for fans to interact with each-other and the artists they love. We would love to be the premier destination site leading the market in providing ever improving fan experiences and ever growing revenue streams for artists.

SoundCtrl: As a last creative question, I am wondering if you would ever consider partnering with an audio hardware company ? more specifically, the speaker market. If someone loves music overall and they know they cannot get to every single concert they want to see in person, although still not ?the real thing,?? the experience could be further emulated with a combined high quality audio and visual experience. Any thoughts?

Judy: We?re very interested in forming relationships with a variety of partners. Whether that be audio hardware or perhaps device makers, we think EVNTLIVE has the potential to find synergies with many existing brands that make up the backbone of the music world.

SoundCtrl: Thanks for the chat. We?ll be excited to see how everything turns out for your launch!

Details are still to come for EVNTLIVE but you can keep in-the-know by signing up to receive news announcements on their website here.

U.N. told atheists face discrimination around globe

GENEVA (Reuters) - Atheists, humanists and freethinkers face widespread discrimination around the world with expression of their views criminalized and subject in some countries to capital punishment, the United Nations was told on Monday.

In a document for consideration by the world body's Human Rights Council, a global organization linking people who reject religion said atheism was banned by law in a number of states where people were forced to officially adopt a faith.

"Extensive discrimination by governments against atheists, humanists and the non-religious occurs worldwide," declared the grouping, the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) which has some 120 member bodies in 45 countries.

In Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan "atheists can face the death penalty on the grounds of their belief" although this was in violation of U.N. human rights accords, the IHEU said.

Further, in several others legal measures "effectively criminalize atheism (and) the expression and manifestation of atheist beliefs" or lead to systematic discrimination against freethinkers, the document declared.

It was submitted to the rights council as it opened its annual Spring session against a background of new efforts in the U.N. by Muslim countries to obtain a world ban on denigration of religion, especially what they call "Islamophobia".

Three of the states with legislation providing for death for blasphemy against Islam, a charge which can be applied to atheists who publicly reveal their ideas, are on the council - Pakistan, Mauritania and Maldives.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told the council on Monday there was a "rising trend" of Islamophobia, adding: "We condemn all sorts of incitement to hatred and religious discrimination against Muslims and people of other faiths."

OIC WANTS ACTION

And earlier this month a top official of the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said the body would be focusing on getting agreement on criminalizing denigration of religion in coming talks with Western countries.

In November last year, the head of the 21-country Arab League told the U.N. Security Council in New York his organisation wanted a binding international framework to ensure "that religious faith and its symbols are respected".

The IHEU, and other non-governmental rights groupings, argue that many Muslim governments use this terminology and the concept of "religious blasphemy" within their own countries to cow both atheists and followers of other religions.

A number of these governments "prosecute people who express their religious doubt or dissent, regardless of whether those dissenters identify as atheist", the IHEU document submitted to the rights council said.

Islamic countries - including Bangladesh, Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Turkey - had also stepped up prosecution of "blasphemous" expression of criticism of religion in social media like Facebook and Twitter.

OIC countries have 15 seats on the council, all from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and make up just less than one third of the rights body.

Seth MacFarlane says "no way" he would host Oscars again

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Seth MacFarlane said on Tuesday that he would not host the star-studded Academy Awards ceremony again, after TV critics panned Sunday's show.

"Family Guy" creator and star MacFarlane was asked on Twitter whether he would host the Oscars a second time after making his debut in Sunday's show, and replied: "No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though."

MacFarlane's response came after TV critics slammed the telecast, in which 40.3 million Americans saw Iran hostage thriller "Argo" take home the top prize for Best Picture.

In a night of risqu? jokes about female nudity and zingers about gays and Jews, MacFarlane, 39, poked fun at himself in an opening sketch with William Shatner and the "Star Trek" star told him he was in danger of being deemed "the worst Oscar host ever."

While some critics lashed out at MacFarlane's hosting, others placed more blame on the overall song-and-dance-heavy show, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, which ran for 3 1/2 hours.

MacFarlane's appeal among young people did though provide an 11 percent bump in the 18-49 demographic coveted by TV networks and advertisers. And overall viewer ratings were up, making for the largest Oscar audience in three years.

MacFarlane was also a hit on social media, where 13 percent of conversation across Facebook, Twitter and blogs rated him the "best host ever" according to social media research firm Fizziology.

MacFarlane, the creator and voice star of Fox network's animated shows "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," made his directorial debut on the big screen with the R-rated comedy "Ted" last year.

He is currently working on his next project - writing and directing a live action comedy film "A Million Ways to Die in the West," starring Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron.

Battered Monti may still be key player in Italy vote

ROME (Reuters) - Prime Minister Mario Monti has put his image as an independent technocrat at risk by joining the hurly-burly of Italy's election campaign but investors hope he will retain a key role in government after the vote, whatever the outcome.

Monti's centrist bloc is expected to come a lowly fourth in the election on Sunday and Monday, which polls suggest will be won by the center-left, but it may still be needed to help form a stable government.

Whatever happens, the former economics professor will be remembered for helping to save Italy from a perilous debt crisis thanks to his personal credibility and decisive action to shore up public finances.

Opinions differ over the merits of his policies, but in just one year of office he restored Italy's international standing and made progress in reforming key areas such as pensions and the labor market.

He also won the admiration, if not the affection, of most Italians, who appreciated his professorial manner and expertise even while they felt the pain of his tax hikes.

All that may have led him to overplay his hand at the end of last year when, after months of denial followed by weeks of indecision, Monti announced that instead of leaving front-line politics he would seek a second term.

The aura of the respected, non-partisan technocrat vanished almost overnight and at the age of 69, Monti embarked on an unlikely new career as a campaigning politician, a role for which he immediately seemed strikingly ill-suited.

His attempt to present his "Civic Choice" as a breath of fresh air on Italy's political scene has been undermined by his choice of coalition allies, political veterans many Italians see as typical representatives of old and discredited parties.

At the same time his campaigning style has wavered uneasily between maintaining an austere, authoritative image and trying to appear more likeable by cuddling puppies, downing beers and playing stiffly on the carpet with his grandchildren.

He has also appeared uncomfortable and out of character trading insults with his opponents and has committed a number of gaffes, including suggesting that German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not want his center-left rivals to win the election.

Such efforts have reaped little reward. The most recent polls put Monti's alliance in fourth place with 13 percent of the vote behind Pier Luigi Bersani's center-left, Silvio Berlusconi's center-right and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement led by comedian Beppe Grillo.

Persistent murmurings since a poll black-out two weeks before the vote suggest that Monti is losing even more ground, mainly in favor of Grillo.

SAVAGED BY BERLUSCONI

Clearly in difficulty, Monti has transformed his policy positions to try to improve his fortunes, with escalating promises of tax cuts which seem out of line with his record of fiscal rigor while in office.

But after being widely revered as prime minister he has been savaged as a candidate, especially by Berlusconi who has put his renowned campaigning skills to good effect, reeling off data to show how his policies have hurt the economy.

"Berlusconi has attacked and destroyed Monti's image in the eyes of the Italians," said prominent pollster Nicola Piepoli.

Yet despite all this, investors inside and outside Italy still see the former European Commissioner as an anchor of stability and believe his coalition offers the best prospects for the kind of structural reforms that Italy's stagnant economy needs.

It is likely that a fragmented result would mean Bersani needs to join forces with Monti in order to govern.

What this would mean for Monti remains to be seen. When he entered the race he said he aimed to remain prime minister and virtually ruled out the idea of serving as a minister under anyone else. But his many supporters will hope that he can swallow his pride and agree to serve as economy minister.

Otherwise he may have a chance of succeeding Giorgio Napolitano as state president after the election or, perhaps more likely, of taking a top job in the European Union.

The positions of European Commission president held by Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President occupied by Herman Van Rompuy both fall vacant in 2014.

Police name suspect in Vegas shooting

(Reuters) - Police have identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of an aspiring rapper as he drove on the Las Vegas Strip in a Maserati before dawn on Thursday, sparking a fiery crash that also killed a cab driver and his passenger.

Ammar Asim Faruq Harris, described as armed and dangerous, was still at large on Saturday, but the black Range Rover from which he is suspected of opening fire had been impounded, Las Vegas police said.

Authorities said a gunman in a Range Rover opened fire early on Thursday on the silver Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch."

Cherry was slain and his car veered out of control and smashed into a taxi, which exploded into flames in an intersection on the Las Vegas Strip in front of several casino resorts, killing the driver and a passenger and triggering another multi-car crash.

Authorities believe the confrontation started in the valet parking lot of a nearby hotel, the Aria Resort and Casino. But police did not identify a motive for the shooting or the altercation.

Police identified Harris, 26, as the driver of the apparently brand-new luxury sport utility vehicle, and said he had also opened fire. Police said in a statement that he had an "extensive and violent criminal history."

Killed in the cab were driver Michael Bolden, 62, and a passenger who has not been identified by authorities. Las Vegas television station KTNV identified the passenger killed as Sandi Sutton, a Washington state woman who worked for a Seattle-area chamber of commerce.

A passenger in Cherry's vehicle suffered a minor injury and cooperated with police, authorities said. Three other people were also injured in the melee, which took place near the Bellagio and Caesars Palace hotels.

The incident occurred less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

(AP) ? Las Vegas is combining its love of mega pop-stars and over-the-top theatrics for a new Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show opening this summer.

Cirque du Soleil CEO Daniel Lamarre announced Thursday that the company's newest show will be called "Michael Jackson ONE." The show at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Strip will start preview performances May 23. It will officially premiere June 29.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Yankees outfielders Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner could be switching positions.

Granderson worked out in left field Thursday and the speedy Gardner switched to center.

"I think it has a chance to help us a little bit, but I'm not really sure," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's why I've said from the beginning that I'm going to toy with it. I'm not saying today that this is what it's going to be opening day."

Girardi plans to play the pair together in upcoming spring training games.

"See if we like it," Girardi said. "If we do, we'll stay with it. If we don't, we won't."

Granderson also will get some playing time in center.

"I'd loved to play center. That's what I've been playing. At the same time, I want to play in general," Granderson said. "No matter where that happens to be, that's where I want to be at. You never know unless you try things out. We don't know what the best way is going to be."

Gardner still thinks of himself as center fielder, a spot where he has previous experience.

"For the last few years I've been playing left, and that's fine with me," he said. "If we went out there and played right now, I'd go to center, I'd go to left, it doesn't really matter to me."

Ichiro Suzuki homered off countryman Hiroki Kuroda during batting practice and tipped his helmet toward the fans after an ovation.

Derek Jeter, coming back from ankle surgery, continued taking part in defensive drills and faced right-hander Jim Miller in BP. He took six pitches, hit a liner to right and fouled a ball in the batting cage.

Jeter is jogging on and off the field but hasn't started a full outdoor running program.

Second baseman Robinson Cano and first baseman Mark Teixeira are among the position players scheduled to play in Saturday's game against Atlanta at Kissimmee. David Phelps will the starting pitcher.

Notes: Cano will find himself in an unfamiliar spot March 6 when he plays against the Yankees for the first time as a member of the Dominican Republic national team. "It's going to be weird. I think that it's going to be fun," he said. "You get to see a different view of the game." ... Girardi said RHP Phil Hughes (injured upper back) felt better, which was a "good sign for me." The Yankees are hopeful that the right-hander will be able to resume throwing in about a week.

?Nice Guys?, The Friend Zone, And Social Semantics | Pop Psychology

A little over a year ago, a video entitled, ?Why men and women can?t be friends? was uploaded to YouTube. In the video, a man approaches various men and women and presents them with the question, ?can men and women just be friends??. While many of the woman answered in the affirmative, most of the men seemed to answer in the negative, suggesting that men would generally be interested in something more; something sexual. When asked about whether their male friends were interested in having sex them, many of the women seemed to similarly acknowledge that, yes, their male friends probably were interested, so maybe there was more lurking behind that ?just friendship?. In a follow-up video, the same man asked whether it would be alright for people in relationships to hang out alone with same-sex friends. While the men seemed to be of relatively one mind (no, it would not be appropriate), women, again, initially stated that opposite-sex friends are fine. However, when confronted with the possibility of their significant other hanging out alone with a member of opposite-sex, the tune seemed to change dramatically: now men and women agreed that they would, indeed, be bothered by that state of events.

?And here I thought his sudden interest in jogging was purely platonic?

So why the discrepancy in women?s responses, but not men?s? Perhaps it?s simply due to the magic of video editing, where only certain responses were kept to make a point, but, working under the assumption that?s not happening, I think there?s something interesting going on here. Understanding what that something is will require us to dig deeper into two concepts that have been floating around for some time: ?the friend zone? and ?Nice guys?. The friend zone, as many of you know, refers to the context where someone wants a relationship with another, but that other doesn?t return the affection. Since the interest isn?t mutual, the party interested in the relationship settles for a friendship with the target of their affections, often with the hope that someday things will change. ?Nice guys? on the other hand, are typically men who are stuck in the friend zone and, upon the eventual realization that their friendship will probably not transition into a relationship, become irritated with the person they were interested in, resulting in the friendship being called off and feelings being hurt. The friendship, after all, is not what they were after; they wanted the full relationship (or at least an occasional hook up).

?Nice guys?, in other words, are only being nice because they want to get sex, so they?re not really nice, people seem to feel; hence the quotation marks. Further, ?nice guys? are frequently socially maligned, seemingly because of their (actually held or assumed to be held) attitude that women are obligated to have sex or start a relationship with them because they are nice (whether any substantial number of them consciously think this is another matter entirely). Alternatively, ?nice guys? are looked down on because they view the friendship ? or the friend zone ? as, at best, a consolation prize to what they were actually going after or, at worst, something they couldn?t care less about having. The nerve of these people; insisting that just a friendship isn?t enough! There are some very peculiar things about the label of ?nice guy?, though; things that don?t quite fit at first glance. The first of these is that the earning of the ?nice guy? label appears to be contingent on the target of the affections not returning them. If whomever the ?nice guy? is interested in does return the affections, there is no way to tell whether he was ?nice guy? or one of those?actually nice guys. In other words, you could have two identical guys enacting identical sets of behavior right up to the moment of truth: if the target returns the man?s affections, he?s a nice guy; if she doesn?t and the man doesn?t find that state of affairs satisfactory, he is now a ?nice guy?; not a nice guy.

That, however, is only a surface issue. The much more substantial issue is in the label itself, which would, given its namesake, seem to imply that the problem is the nice behavior of the guys, rather than the attitude of entitlement that the label is ostensibly aimed at. This is very curious. If the entitled attitude is what is supposed to be the problem of the people this term is aimed at, why would the label focus on their otherwise nice behavior; behavior that might not differ in any substantial way from the behavior of genuine nice guys? Further, why is the label male-specific (it?s ?nice guys? not ?nice people?, and even when it?s a woman doing it, well, she?s just being a ?nice guy? too)? With these two questions in mind, we?re now prepared to begin to tackle the initial question: why do women?s response to the friendship questions, but not men?s, seem discrepant?

?Thanks for taking me shopping; I?m so lucky to have a friend like you??

Let?s take the questions in a partially-reversed order: the first is why the term focuses on the nice behavior. The answer here is would seem to revolve around the matter of cooperation and reciprocity more generally. In the social world, when an altruistic individual provides you with a benefit at a cost to themselves, the altruist generally expects repayment at some point down the line. It?s what?s called reciprocal altruism ? or, less formally, cooperation ? and forms the backbone of pretty much every successful social relationship among non-kin (Trivers, 1971). However, sometimes relationships are not quite as reciprocal in nature: one individual will continuously reap the benefits of altruism without returning them in kind. Names for those types of individuals abound, though the most common are probably exploiters or cheaters. Having a reputation as a cheater is, generally speaking, bad for business when it comes to making and maintaining friendships, so it?s helpful to maintain a good reputation amongst others.

The implications for why the ?nice guy? label focuses on otherwise nice behavior should be immediately apparent: if someone is behaving nicely towards you ? even if that nice behavior might be unwanted ? it creates the expectation of reciprocity, both among the altruist and potentially other third parties. Failing to return the favor, then, can make one look like a social cheater. This obviously puts the recipient in a bind: while they would certainly like to enjoy the benefits of the nice individual?s behavior (free meals, social support, and so on), they don?t want to have the obligation to repay it if it?s avoidable (it?s that expectation that makes people uncomfortable about accepting gifts; not because they don?t want said gifts). So how can that obligation be effectively avoided? One way seems to be to question the altruist?s motives: if the altruist was only giving to get something else (like sex), and if that something else is viewed to be of substantially more valuable than what was initially given (also like sex tends to be), one can frame the ostensible altruist as the exploiter, the cheater, or, in this case, the ?nice guy?. If a woman wants to either (a) reap the benefits of nice guys, (b) avoid the costs in not reciprocating what the nice guy wants, or (c) both, then the label of ?nice guy? can be quite effective. Since there behavior wasn?t actually nice, there?s no need to reciprocate it.

Bear in mind, none of this needs to be consciously entertained. In fact, in some cases it?s better to not have conscious awareness of such things. For instance, to make that reframing (nice to ?nice?) more successful, the person doing the reframing has to come off as having innocent motives themselves: if the woman in question was explicit about her desire to take advantage of men?s niceness towards her with no intentions of any repayment, she?s back to being the cheater in the situation (just as the ?nice guy?s? behavior is back to just being plain old nice, if a bit naive). Understanding this point helps us answer the third question: why are women?s responses to the friendship question seemingly discrepant? Conscious awareness of these kinds of mental calculations will typically do a woman no favors, as they might ?leak out? into the world, so to speak. To think of it in another way, you?ll have an easier time trying to convince people that you didn?t do something wrong if you legitimately can?t access any memories of you doing something wrong (as opposed to having access to those memories and needing to suppress them). To relate this to the answers in the videos, when a woman is receiving benefits from her male friends, keeping the knowledge that her male friends are trying to get something more from her out of mind can help her defend against the criticism of being a social cheater, as well as avoid the need to pay her male friends back. On the other hand, when it?s her boyfriend who?s now being ?nice? to other women, there are benefits to her being rather aware of the underlying motives.

?I swear I was just giving her my opinion about her new bra as a friend!?

Finally, we turn to the answer to second question, the answer to which ought to be obvious by now: why is the ?nice guy? term male-specific? This answer has a lot to do with the simple fact that, all else being equal, women do prefer men who invest in them, both in the short and long term, but investment plays a substantially lessened role for women in drawing and maintaining male interest (Buss, 2003). Put simply, males invest because females tend to find that investment attractive. So, to sum up, women want to receive investment and males are generally willing to provide that investment. However, male investment typically comes contingent on the possibility or reality of mating, and when that possibility is withdrawn, so too does male investment wane. The term ?nice guy? might serve to both avoid the costs that come with receiving that investment but not returning it, as well as a potential shaming tactic for men who withdraw their niceness when it becomes clear that niceness will not pay off as intended. Similarly, a woman might doubt her partner?s ?niceness? when it?s directed towards another. This analysis, however, only examines the female-end of things; males face a related set of problems, just from a different angle. Further, the underlying male strategy is, I assure you, not any less strategic.

Nerdy CEO-turned-governor faces the Detroit challenge

LANSING, Michigan (Reuters) - In today's partisan environment, many U.S. politicians tend to hew close to their base and not worry about angering their opponents, but Michigan Governor Rick Snyder possesses a rare talent for raising hackles on both sides.

In early December, the Republican governor angered the state's powerful labor unions by signing so-called "right-to-work" legislation allowing workers to opt out of union membership. Then earlier this month, Snyder annoyed Michigan's small-government conservatives with a plan to expand Medicaid and raise the gas tax for road repairs.

Snyder, 54, merely smiles when asked about this knack.

"I'm here to deliver results to my customers," Snyder said in a recent interview. "My customers are the citizens of Michigan."

"That's the simple way I look at it, it's about giving great customer service."

Now he has in his hands the fate of 700,000 customers - the residents of Detroit. A Snyder-appointed review panel said on Tuesday the city is in financial crisis and needs outside help, leaving it to the governor to decide if he will name an emergency manager to take over its finances.

"There is very limited political upside to appointing an emergency manager," said University of Michigan political scientist Michael Traugott. "But I think Snyder is prepared to do it."

LONG-TERM VISION

A CEO-turned-politician, Snyder does not easily fit into an ideological slot. Many of those who know him describe a long-term thinker who approaches politics through the eyes of a businessman and does not avoid tough decisions.

Vic Strecher recalled that when Snyder's venture capital firm invested $2.5 million in 1998 for 30 percent of his fledgling online healthcare coaching business HealthMedia Inc (now owned by Johnson & Johnson), Snyder took a hands-off approach, telling Strecher to get on and run the firm.

When "dotcom turned to dotbomb" in 2000, Strecher said Snyder was "always a steady force" with a vision for his firm.

"He said we needed to stay focused on the long-term vision of getting customers good value," he said.

For Snyder's foes on the left such as United Auto Workers president Bob King, the governor has pursued a right-wing agenda after running as a moderate in 2010. King says his goal in 2014 is to prevent Snyder from gaining a second term.

"He told people he was a moderate and he has done the exact opposite, passing some of the most extreme right-wing legislation," King said. "We'll back a candidate (in 2014) who is for 100 percent of the people, not just the top 1 percent."

Conservatives have opposed Snyder for taxing pensioners and supporting a health exchange for Michigan that is part of Democratic President Barack Obama's healthcare reforms. But they like the fact he has fixed the state's budget mess.

Long-time conservative operative Jack Hoogendyk says Snyder is a "bit of an enigma."

"He does a lot of things true conservatives support and a lot of things conservatives disagree with," he said. "But I think he views the state's problems through the lens of a businessman and has taken a level-headed approach to running Michigan Inc."

'ONE TOUGH NERD'

When Snyder, formerly CEO of venture capital firm Ardesta and one-time executive at computer company Gateway, decided to run for governor in the 2010 election, he went into the primaries as a political unknown considered the most moderate Republican in a crowded field of five.

Joe Lehman, president of conservative, free-market Michigan think-tank the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, recalls Snyder appearing at one of the group's regular breakfast meetings in 2009 ahead of the gubernatorial race. Snyder "was the only politician ever to stick to our rule that they not give a speech."

"I thought there's no way this guy is ever going to be governor," Lehman said.

Snyder's campaign, much of it self-funded, included a 2010 Super Bowl ad in Michigan describing him as "One Tough Nerd" who could fix Michigan's fiscal mess.

The nerd in Snyder was on display February 7 in Lansing as he fielded questions from reporters about his new proposed budget. With no papers in front of him, he quoted figures from the budget and the justification for them with ease.

Snyder says his decisions are based on the simple question of what is best for Michigan, not partisan politics.

Medicaid expansion, he says, will save the state money because it will provide primary care to poorer Michiganders rather than force them into expensive emergency care that drives premiums up for everyone else.

While ordinary families get that, "you go here," he says pointing out the window of his office at the state capitol "and it's this huge controversy."

"Doesn't that show the political culture's kind of messed up?"

On the issue of Detroit, Snyder reiterates a statement from his 2010 campaign that "Detroit needs to be a great city."

He highlights recent transportation investments in the city and the need for a new bridge to boost trade and create jobs.

"So let's get the city government's finances fixed," he said. "And we are going to get them fixed."

How he handles Detroit's future could be a factor in his likely bid for re-election. And he has to contend with falling approval ratings in the wake of the "right-to-work" bill.

But when it comes to running for a second term, Snyder isn't so enigmatic.

"I haven't formally announced," he said. "But I've got more work I'd like to do."

NFL Draft 2013: DT Bennie Logan scouting report

While most of the DT talk, in terms of finding a guy in the draft to generate a pass-rush from the 3 technique spot, has revolved around guys like Star Lotulelei, Sheldon Richardson and Sharrif Floyd, one name that hasn't gotten a lot of attention is LSU's Bennie Logan.

Logan has been on my radar since the beginning of the year, when I scouted the UW/LSU contest and noticed a guy with length, quickness and speed that reminded me of Chicago's Henry Melton - who many know I have championed as a guy Seattle should go after in Free Agency if they aren't convinced they'll be able to find some interior pass rush among this year's draft crop.

At 6'3, and right around 300 lbs, Logan possesses ideal size for the 3 technique, to go with flexibility, burst and length to create and close in space, and has demonstrated such natural ability in his limited playing time at LSU.

Here's my updated scouting report on him:

Bennie Logan
DT
LSU
#18
0603 298 4.87
Coushatta, Louisiana
Red River High School

Positives: Thick frame with long arms and powerful lower half. Gets arms extended off the snap and uses hands well to keep his frame clean. Utilizes low center of gravity to bull rush and collapse the pocket from the inside. Impressive hand quickness to swat and clear. Good burst to close on space in front of him. Maintains backfield vision while engaged, and disengages nicely to close the running lane to either side.

Quickness and punch of a 3-technique, but exhibits awareness and anchoring strength to be a 2-gap player as well. Stays low off the snap and displays good bend to absorb impact. Appears to lack "plus" lateral quickness. Will get turned around with his back to his opponent when rushing, and can be taken out of the play altogether.

Negatives: Isn't very powerful in his upper body, struggling to throw defenders off his frame when locked on.Has a tendency to lose leverage/position and doesn't look nearly as powerful when asked to pinch/squeeze down and move his opponent laterally, as he does in a straight line. Appears to take the occasional play off from an effort standpoint, and technically, resorts to bull-rushing more frequently than he should considering his other natural gifts. Isn't very instinctive or aware against the run.

NFL Comparison: Henry Melton, DT, Chicago Bears - Logan has ideal quickness, athleticism and flexibility to be an effective interior rusher from the 3-technique spot. He's still raw and inconsistent when asked to hold position or defend the run, but further technical coaching could help mold him into an extremely disruptive interior force, as there are no apparent limitations in terms of natural tools.

Considering his inexperience and that he isn't the size/speed combo that some of the bigger names in the draft are, we could see Logan slip as far as the 3rd round potentially, where he could be a tremendous value for a team looking for an interior sack threat with starter upside.

Seahawks Fit: Logan has the upside to be a starting 3-technique DT, and possesses the combination of athleticism, length and size that John Schneider and Pete Carroll rave about. He's raw, but would give better immediate pass-rush from the interior than any of Mebane, Branch or McDonald, and could find himself in the rotation quickly, as Scruggs did last season. Logan has more interior value than Scruggs though considering his size, and has upside that could make him an every-down player within a couple of years.

If Seattle opts not to trade up for a Richardson or Floyd in the first round (which they'll most certainly need to do if they want either one of those guys), a guy like Logan could be a nice under-the-radar grab in the 2nd or 3rd, where they'd get raw, 1st round talent.

You can find more of Derek's analysis at his Seahawks-centric draft, free agency, & pro player personnel site called "ScoutTheSeahawks." Head over and bookmark it - he maintains a really great free agent tracker, in addition to his Draft focus, that is much more in-depth than most places because of his background doing deep scouting of NFL Draft prospects.

No-work Congress: Lawmakers leave for recess with their jobs not done

Congress, led by the Senate, in what could be seen as an attempt to set a new level of irresponsibility, not only used a filibuster Thursday to block the nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense, it also departed Washington Friday for a 10-day recess with the $1 trillion-plus sequestration of government funds less than two weeks away.

"Recess" means vacation, back in the home district, not working, for most of America's 535 intrepid legislators, unless citizens would like to count grubbing for campaign money as work. Congress returns to work in Washington Feb. 25, four days before the budget cuts kick in.

The sequestration measure was passed by the two houses of Congress and signed by President Barack Obama on the argument that the cuts in it were so drastic, and so unreasoning in the sense that they fall equally on the just and the unjust, civilian and military government services without reasonable differentiation, that the White House and Congress would have to reach agreement on them to forestall the ax falling March 1. That logic underestimated the folly and partisan recalcitrance of the parties concerned.

As usual, the American public gets to pay the price of Washington's lack of ability to reach consensus in the face of America's problems, in this case legitimate needs for services and the requirement to pay for them while managing the nation's rising debt. The fact that these people are taking a recess rather than addressing the spending-revenue problem is almost unbelievable.

The other problem, the Senate's inaction on Mr. Obama's nominee to head the Defense Department, in charge of the nation's defense, is of a lesser magnitude, but also irresponsible. The Senate's failure to reform itself on filibusters at the beginning of this session, the fault of both Democrats and Republicans, meant that on Thursday a 58-40 vote was not considered to be a majority of the senators, in defiance of grade school arithmetic as well as logic. A final vote on Mr. Hagel's nomination will now have to wait until the senators come back to class after their time out on the playground. This action on the part of Senate Republicans makes it clear that their goal, without regard to November's election results, is to make it as difficult as possible for Mr. Obama to lead America.

Again, in the case of Mr. Hagel as well as the sequester, it is the American public who will pay the price for Congress' irresponsibility. How long are they going to act like this?

Custody battle waged over Apollo 'lunar Bibles'

Sotheby's

One of 300 microfilm editions of the King James Bible that flew to the moon on board NASA's Apollo 14 mission in February 1971.

By Robert Z. Pearlman, collectSPACE.com Editor

Miniature Bibles that flew to the moon more than 40 years ago are now at the center of a custody dispute between the author who wrote about their history and the state caring for the reverend who was behind their creation.

The two-year moon bible legal battle, which became public Feb. 17 through the reporting of the Houston Chronicle, began in 2010 when the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) intervened in a Dallas auction to prevent Oklahoma Christian author Carol Mersch from selling one of the so-called "lunar Bibles" at auction.

At issue was how Mersch received the Bible. According to court records obtained by the Houston Chronicle, the author got the space-flown scripture from former NASA chaplain and scientist John Stout. Mersch's 2010 book, "The Apostles of Apollo," recounts Stout's founding of the Apollo Prayer League and how hundreds of the microfilmed King James Bibles were flown the moon.

Stout, 91, and his wife, Mary Helen, were declared wards of the state around the same time that Mersch claims she was given the religious space relic to sell for the couple.

A DADS spokesperson told the Chronicle that it was the agency's job to protect the financial assets of its wards.

As Mersch is said to have at least four Bibles, at stake is potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars. A December 2012 auction of another lunar Bible ? unrelated to Mersch ? sold for $56,250 at Sotheby's in New York. [NASA's 17 Apollo Missions in Photos]

Glory of the moon
Three hundred of the approximately 1 inch-by-1 inch microfilm Bibles flew aboard NASA's February 1971 Apollo 14 mission, the third of six flights to land men on the moon.

The small squares, each printed with the 1,245 pages and 773,746 words of the Christian holy scriptures, were not an official cargo of the space agency. Rather, they were carried by moonwalker Edgar Mitchell as a favor to Stout and the Apollo Prayer League, a group of faithful NASA employees, who, led by Stout, prayed for the safety of the astronauts.

Two hundred of the Bibles were kept aboard the Apollo 14 command module "Kitty Hawk," which remained in lunar orbit. The remaining 100 descended to the moon's surface with Mitchell and mission commander Alan Shepard on board the lunar module "Antares" to the Fra Mauro lunar highlands.

Collectively, the Bibles became known as the "First Lunar Bible."

It wasn't the first time however, that the Bibles had been in space, let alone to the moon. The 300, together with 212 more, first flew on Apollo 13 in April 1970, but as a mid-flight explosion prevented a lunar landing, Stout requested the Bibles fly again on Apollo 14. (A single Bible also flew on Apollo 12 in 1969, but due to a packaging error, made it only to lunar orbit.)

When Apollo 14 returned to Earth, Mitchell presented the Bibles back to Stout, who gave some of the intact Bibles and hand-cut 50-page fragments to members of the Apollo Prayer League. The remainder were kept by the Stouts.

Gift or grab
Forty years later, the Stouts were placed into guardianship after investigators deemed their living conditions to be in "deplorable condition," as the Houston Chronicle reported, citing a 2010 affidavit. The elderly couple are now living in a nursing home in Dayton, Texas.

The state is seeking the return of the Bibles in Mersch's custody to help support the Stouts' living expenses.

Last October, a judge ruled in favor of Mersch, but Texas has since filed an appeal. Mersch has filed a counter suit in Oklahoma, claiming the Bibles were gifted to her by the Stouts.

Mersch told the Houston Chronicle she is acting purely out of concern for the Stouts. She said that in the course of researching her book, she had grown close to the couple.

Jonathan Stout, the couple's son, said he disagrees. "The state is helping them," he told the Houston Chronicle of the involvement by DADS. "The other people are not."
